Supplementary schools receive awards

Midland supplementary schools receive quality awards

Sixteen supplementary schools received awards and then celebrated with an international performance, at the West Indian Centre, Spon Street, Coventry on Wednesday, 20 October.

Coventry Cllr Lynette Kelly (portfolio for Education), Colin Green (Director of Children and Young People Services), the Deputy Lord Mayor of Coventry and CEO of ContinYou, Karin Woodley presented the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRC) Quality Framework awards to children and teachers from the Midlands supplementary schools.

This was followed by performances from The Greek School of Coventry, Sree Bharathalaya (Academy for performing Art, Culture, Languages and Supplementary School) and Somali Cultural Resource Centre Coventry.

Supplementary schools offer a range of learning opportunities, including national curriculum subjects. They are set up by local community groups and they operate from a variety of venues, such as community centres, youth clubs, places of worship and mainstream schools. They run throughout the week in the evenings, or at weekends.

The Quality Framework is a voluntary quality recognition scheme. It is run for and by supplementary schools and those who support them. It aims to celebrate and record the achievements of supplementary schools and improve quality across the sector.

Supplementary schools have been working incredibly hard to evidence the quality of the provision which they provide and the event is to celebrate their achievements.

Congratulating the supplementary schools on their awards, NRC Regional Advisor Claire Arthur said ‘The Quality Framework Awards show that supplementary schools are dedicated to delivering quality services to their communities, and many will be progressing on to higher level awards which is extremely encouraging’.

The schools who received awards are:

  • Ishango
  • Care Link West Midlands
  • East African Community (Aqoon Tuition Centre)
