Denbigh schoolchildren celebrate Christmas with local writer

On Monday, 13 December, Year 1 and 2 children from Ysgol Y Parc and Ysgol Gwaenynog schools got together for a special celebration event at Denbigh Town Hall, where each class had a story workshop with local writer, Polly Snape, one with Madeleine Frost from York and another one from the Denbigh librarians. After that they all came together at the Town Hall to act out a story alongside adult actors.

The children have been working with Polly Snape on the Patchwork Quilt project. Polly is a writer and director who specialises in developing children’s literacy skills through drama projects. An ex-teacher, she has been working in schools for 16 years and has recently moved to Llanelidan from Yorkshire.

Polly initially brought her special story quilt into schools to work with nursery and reception children. The quilts have different pieces of material which remind the fictional characters ‘Granny and Grandad’ of funny things that have happened to them throughout their life. The children learnt about the stories and acted some of them out for their families and friends.

Polly has also been exploring more of the stories through after-school interactive storytelling sessions in both schools, to which both children and parents are invited. In a hope to encourage parents and children to read together, all children were given their own simple storybook to take home to colour in and read with their families.

Polly then went on to introduce Years 1 and 2 children to her special Christmas Quilt – a new quilt of twelve different pieces of material that remind ‘Granny and Grandad’ of things that have happened to them at Christmas. Each class has learnt three of the stories, plus several more have been told at after-school sessions.

Twelve paintings of the Christmas ‘Granny and Grandad’ stories which have been specially made by illustrator Charlotte Long, were displayed in various shop windows in Denbigh. The children hunted for the paintings and then completed a quiz about the pictures.

Polly delivered the project in partnership with ContinYou Cymru. ContinYou Cymru is the national organisation that uses innovative ways to support lifelong learning throughout Wales. Our vision is of a Wales where everyone has the chance to improve their learning and well-being.
